AIRFORCE ONE
MOVING FORWARD AND MOVING HISTORY
By: Rodney Estay
We have all been watching Settoon Towing move into the future. We are doing so bybuilding bigger and better equipment, joining several marine safety organizations and working with marine tech schools to help better educate personnel.
What you may not know, is that while we are moving forward, we were asked to help move history.
The history that I am referring to is an Aero Commander 680 twin engine aircraft. This aircraft used the designation “Air Force One”, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The President used this aircraft for short trips around the country during his term in office. For longer trips he used “Columbine III,” which was a four engine Lockheed.
The Aero Commander 680 was on display at Wendell-Williams Memorial Museum in Patterson, Louisiana. The M/V Jane P. Settoon was dispatched on April 12, 2010. They arrived on location at 11:00 that day and stood by till morning. They then assisted the crew to set and tie down the plane on a deck barge. The tow departed at 18:00 on the 13thand arrived in Houma at 01:30 on the 14th. By mid morning they were met by the moving crew along with local media. The plane was loaded onto a truck and moved to the Regional Military Museum on Barrow St. The museum is opened on weekdays and invite everyone to go and view their exhibits.
We would like to thank the crew (Ed Dufrene, Gregory Rodriguez, John Barnes and Jimmy Ramy, Jr.) of the M/V Jane P. Settoon for a job well done.
BULK TOW DIVISION, April 2010
The M/V Hannah C. Settoon was completed and delivered on April 10th from Orange Shipbuilding/ Conrad Industries in Orange, Texas. The Hannah is a 2,600hp Caterpillar powered vessel. She will operate from Woodriver, IL to South Louisiana destinations, moving Canadian Crude Oil.
The M/V Hannah C. Settoon was christened on April 17th along with the M/V Austin C. Settoon and the M/V Dee Anna Settoon in Belle River on the land side. The M/V Parker A. Settoon was christened the following day on the Port Allen Route side.
Mike Ellis was Master of Ceremonies for the Christening, with Mr. Russ Settoon as the key note speaker. Mr. Settoon recognized all three of his children for which the above boats are named, and spoke of stellar qualities possessed by each of them. Many of Settoon’s outstanding vendors were in attendance and the celebration was enjoyed by all.
LARGE TOW DIVISION, January 2010
As of January 1, 2010, (3) 60MB unit tow’s are working within Settoon’s large division customer base.
Our 3rd tow recently departed Morgan City enroute to Woodriver, IL to load Crude Oil. The new barges (SMI 30014 & 30015) are currently being pushed by a charter boat until construction on the M/V Hannah C. Settoon is complete in late March. Conrad shipyard is constructing the Hannah in Orange, TX.
Settoon Towing is very pleased with the industry wide approval of our equipment as we continue with our projected growth plan. The innovation and foresight of Settoon’s upper management is changing the way bulk petroleum is transported on the Inland Waterways of America.
SHAW GROUP PROJECT, March 2009
We are pleased to announce that Settoon Towing has been awarded
a three year marine logistics support contract with the Shaw
Groups Environmental Infrastructure division. We are presently
assisting the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers with marine and
logistic support on their Inner Harbor Navigation Canal Project
which involves the closure of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet
(MRGO). Our marine support in this project is maintaining
the barge fleeting area as well as providing marine logistics
by being the go to for all marine traffic communications and
movement in the project work area.
LARGE TOW DIVISION, January 2009
Settoon Towing proudly entered into the Jumbo barge
market in January of 2009. This is the first step in Settoon’s
growth plan for the future. Settoon took delivery of (4) 30mb
barges from Trinity’s Madisonville location in January and
February, and (2) new tow boats from Eastern Shipbuilders
in Panama City, FL in March and April.
Our 1st 3 200hp boat, The M/V Austin C. Settoon was delivered
in late February. The M/V Parker A. Settoon was delivered
in late April. These (2) tow’s are currently traversing the
Mississippi river system, and entire Intracoastal Waterway
system on the U.S. Gulf Coast.
We currently have under construction our 3rd 60mb unit tow,
and a new 2, 600hp tow boat, to be delivered in Q1 of 2010.
We remain a “customer service” motivated company, knowing
that our success to this point is because of our commitment
to excellent customer service. All of our equipment is SIRE
accredited, and our membership in the TMSA2 program is current.
We are also AWO member’s, with continued compliance in the
RCP within.
